Know what you’re looking at
Female patterning is useful when comparing nijsseni with other members of its informal group. Male color alone is not enough to settle a difficult identification. Use both sexes, clear lateral views and dependable origin information; the comparison guide is an introduction rather than a formal taxonomic key.
From river to aquarium
This Peruvian species is associated with Ucayali tributaries and slow blackwater habitats. Low mineral content is more informative than brown water by itself. Tannin-colored hard water should not be assumed to reproduce the conditions of a soft-water source locality.
A practical aquarium plan
Use an established aquarium with shaded retreats and a consistent replacement-water routine. The 90-litre planning minimum allows a management margin, but every layout still needs inspection from a fish’s perspective. Check whether shelter actually breaks pursuit, rather than simply making the aquarium look dense.
Feeding with observation
Offer varied small invertebrate foods and observe feeding by both fish. Spread access across the aquarium if one individual guards the usual feeding point. Avoid compensating for a socially excluded fish by adding excess food that remains in the substrate.
When breeding changes the balance
A compatible pair and carefully managed soft water are more important than chasing a single pH number. Prepare food for tiny fry before spawning and keep disturbance around the cavity low. Record failed and successful attempts with the same care so changes are based on evidence.
Choose the company carefully
Our Finder favors a dedicated aquarium for nijsseni. A display with other fish creates additional territory and predation variables. If you choose companions, evaluate behavior continually and keep a practical removal plan; a calm first week does not predict behavior once reproduction begins.
Keep the story with the fish
Ask for the breeder’s identification and any locality history. Keep nijsseni and panduro lines distinct, including when young fish look similar. Good labeling is part of responsible breeding: uncertain origin should remain uncertain in the records rather than becoming a precise claim.
