Species field notes · Blue panda dwarf cichlid

Apistogramma panduro

Panduro rewards a keeper interested in pair behavior and contrasting blue, yellow and dark markings. A dedicated soft-water setup is our preferred starting point. The important question is whether the actual individuals tolerate each other; buying a male and female does not establish a compatible pair.

Know what you’re looking at

This species is often offered as pandurini or blue panda. Compare the distribution of dark flank and tail markings with nijsseni, using clear side photographs of both sexes. A frightened or breeding fish can present a different pattern, so record more than one calm observation.

From river to aquarium

Known from the Ucayali drainage and Tahuayo area of northern Peru, panduro uses quieter tributary habitats with leaf accumulation. In an aquarium, a network of retreats gives a pursued fish choices. Do not arrange every cavity so its entrance faces the same open central space.

A practical aquarium plan

Plan for at least 90 litres with a 75 × 30 cm base in this guide. The extra room is a management margin, not a guarantee against aggression. Prepare consistently soft water and establish a separation plan before introduction. Test replacement water instead of relying on its appearance.

Feeding with observation

Use small foods that both individuals readily accept. Feed in separate sheltered locations when necessary and verify intake from the subordinate fish. A persistent change in appetite deserves investigation of social pressure and water quality before changing the menu repeatedly.

When breeding changes the balance

Pair compatibility is a central challenge. Observe courtship and separation behavior rather than assuming constant proximity is desirable. Organize a quiet breeding aquarium, fry food and a safe method of removing a targeted adult; do not wait until a fish is injured to find spare accommodation.

Choose the company carefully

We exclude panduro from the Finder’s general community suggestions. Small upper-water companions may work in some setups, but they can complicate brood care and are not a substitute for watching the pair. For a first attempt, keep the stocking plan easy to reverse.

Keep the story with the fish

Preserve locality and supplier information, including any uncertainty about the trade identification. Closely related fish should not be mixed casually in a breeding project. Photograph the adults and label offspring with the same level of certainty supported by the parents’ records.
